Training Your Horse

Return to Home Page ...

On the day you buy a horse from the sales ring or breed a horse, you get

  • 8 Farm trains (Farm Work - FW)
  • 1 Public train (Public Work - PW)
After this you revert back to just the 2 training runs per day. So, if you don't use these additional trains on the first day, you lose them.

Normally doing a "public work" reduces the stamina of the horse, however on the horses first day, this does not happen but will for any subsequent public works.

There are two different trains .....
Farm Training/Farm Workout - These are private trains within the confines of your own stable.
Public Training/Public Workout - These are trains which are public and these training times can be seen by all stables under >News >Public Workouts.

If the horse is a home bred, then the breeding information would have told you if the horse is a dirt horse, a turf horse or in some cases a dual surface horse. In this case you will already know the horses prefered surface. In addition it will also say if the horse is a sprinter, a classic or a stayer.
The distances for these catagories are as follows ...
  • Sprinter - 1000 / 1200 / 1400
  • Classic - 1600 / 1800 / 2000
  • Stayer - 2400 / 2850 / 3200

If the horse is a sales ring horse, you will not have the same information associated as with the homebred. However, the surface with the most growth is usually the horses best/prefrered surface. Also, looking at the sire will also tell you the horses likely prefered surface.

With sales ring horses, go to >Market >Sales Ring >View Possible Sires
Clicking on "El Prado" for example ...

El Prado Training01

This sire has a progeny winning percentage of 39% on turf, compared to just 8% on dirt.

Training Method

The first of 8 trains .........
Carry out a single Public Train (without Blinkers, Tongue Tie or Ear Muffs) over 1600 on what you think might be the horses prefered surface.
Note the stamina remaining .......
  • Less than 8% remaining - 1000 / 1200 Horse
  • 9% - 18% remaining indicates - 1400 Horse
  • 19% - 27% remaining indicates - 1400/1600 Horse
  • 28% - 35% remaining indicates - 1400/1800 Horse
  • 36% - 45% remaining indicates - Classic Horse
  • 45% Plus indicates - Staying Horse
The second of 8 trains .........
Carry out a single farm(private) train without Blinkers, Tongue Tie or Ear Muffs over the horses prefered distance ascertained in the previous step.
Keep the surface the same.
This becomes the base training time.

The third of 8 trains .........
Keep at the same distance, carry out a single farm(private) train with blinkers over the horses prefered distance.
Keep the surface the same.
Note the time compared to the base time, has the horse improved its time?.

The fourth of 8 trains .........
Keep at the same distance, carry out a single farm(private) train with Ear Muffs over the horses prefered distance.
Keep the surface the same.
Note the time compared to the base time, has the horse improved its time?.
By now we may have determined the horses prefered distance, and reaction to blinkers and ear muffs.

The fifth of 8 trains .........
Carry out a single farm(private) train with or without blinkers and ear Muffs as determined in the previous two steps but with the tongue tie.

The sixth, seventh and eight of 8 trains .........
At this stage you may have determined the horses preference for ......
  • Surface
  • Distance
  • Blinkers
  • Ear Muffs
  • Tongue Tie
Sometimes the addition of one of the adds (Blinkers, Ear Muffs or Tongue Tie) may not be that obvious.
It may be advisable to use trains 6,7 and 8 to carry out some further evaluation.

And Finally .........
After determing all the horses preference, do one last "Public Work"
This should determine and confirm the horses distance and stamina (liking for the tongue tie).
Using this last PW however, will reduce the horses stamina and subsequent training runs will not be informative until the horse reaches 100% stamina again.
